We Låve Rock

Sometime late saturday evening we're going to play the last chords on our HFMC tour and why not end it with a bang! Yes we're back at the barn for the second year in a row to play for our Norwegian friends at We Låve Rock in Hurum, now on saturday the 21st of May.

After our show at Reginateatern a couple of weeks back I met a Scottish gentleman that I hadn't met before. He told me he was now living in Stockholm and he got to know about HFMC through a mutual friend. He explained to me he was blown away by our performance and the quality of our songs. On top of that he asked me if he could write a review and send it to me, I said sure and here it is. Thank you Andrew Coulthard, glad you like the show:

"Hasse Fröberg and Musical Companion – performance in Uppsala 24 April 2016

It’s always a pleasure to discover new bands, especially when they’re both original and comprised of genuinely talented musicians. So, when I was invited to Uppsala and the Regina Theatre to watch Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion, it felt like it might be a good opportunity.
It was.

Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion (HFMC for short) are Hasse Fröberg on vocals and guitar, Thomsson on bass, Ola Strandberg on drums, Kjell Haraldsson on keyboards and Anton Lindsjö on lead guitar. For many years Hasse has also been the lead singer for Swedish prog giants, The Flower Kings. HFMC is his own band, however, with a track record that includes three full studio albums and a European tour.

I arrived at the venue early, but the theatre was already filling up with expectant fans; an excited home crowd augmented by followers from as far afield as Germany and Japan. The band appeared to a rapturous welcome and, after the intro keyboard number Seconds, launched into Stop the Clock; a triumphant opening that perfectly show-cased their range and talents.

High energy guitar licks, rousing drum patterns, harmonic keyboards together with Hasse’s classic vocals combined to make a heavier rock sound. But that was just for starters. From there, the spellbound audience was treated to a seamless marriage of rock influences, balancing both the powerful and melodic to achieve an intoxicating effect. HFMC are masters of a fusion of genres and styles, including psychedelic, heavy rock, funk and jazz. There were hints of Rush, the original Marillion, Lizzy, Sabbath, Yes, Queen and a host of other classics. Yet the band at all times delivers music that is both original and unique.

Throughout the packed two-hour set they continued to demonstrate their versatility. Ballads led on from complex rock numbers or virtuoso instrumentals, including Hasse’s own superb guitar work. The sum effect establishes HFMC as masters of not only rhythm and melody but also mood.
At no point did the performance drag, with HFMC delivering energy and verve all the way to the closing notes. Stand out numbers included Chasing a Dream, Something Worth Dying For and Fallen Empire, along with the encore pieces Venice California and Stardust Are We.

In summary: a great evening that left this reviewer wanting much more."

Being in a band or as in this case being a bandleader is all about taking chances. When we started to discuss this project, many people told me not to do it. There's no market for Live DVD:s anymore, they're too expensive to produce, the work is very time consuming etc. My answer to all this is...why not record a Live DVD, it sounds like a brilliant idea!

In my opinion we have no choice but to do it. First of all, I think HFMC has become a pretty good live band lately (if I may say so). With a catalogue of three albums and the amount of shows we've done so far on our latest record, the timing couldn't be better to make a document, a statement if you will. The reason I chose Reginateatern is simply that it suits this event a whole lot better than for instance Katalin (which is also in Uppsala), where we played lots of times (and love to play). In case you haven't found out yet, let me inform you the gig is on a sunday. The fact is that it was no dates available throughout the whole spring except for this one. Jonas Curling and "Welcome Uppsala" was kind enough to give me this very day, sunday the 24th of April. The show starts at 6 o clock pm, which is early but good since you'll be home for work on monday morning at a reasonable time.

Even if we'll try to treat this as a normal gig, it's not. The logistics will be a nightmare with extralights and yeah...extra everything, especiallly when it comes to the audio recording. Still we're there to play music for you and that we will. I'm sure we can keep the intensity, dynamics and power even though the cameras. I guess what I'm trying to say is, do yourself the favour and experience HFMC live on this very special event and let's show the world what the "Uppsala crowd" is like. In other words, just behave normal and everything will turn out allright. And to you who think music and a drink or a beer or two is the perfect match - the bar will be open! Please note the doors will open at 5 o clock pm and showtime is at 6 o clock pm. Can it get any better? I mean you'll be home in good time before "Beck starts" and to you who like to party. Here you have the perfect opportunity to get both drunk and to get the hangover taken care of before you go to bed - A win win situation for all involved.

You can find ticketlinks etc in the "No Place Like Home" fb event which you by the way can spread as much as you like. Love to you all!

Reginateatern(会場)を選んだ理由は、シンプルに、今回のイベントには、何度もプレイをしてきたKatalin(これもUppsalaにあって、演奏するのは好きな場所だ)よりずっとふさわしいからだよ。

2015 summary

I truly hope you've had a nice and relaxing Christmas and to those who are interrested, here's me looking back at the year that has passed. As usual I've been stupid enough to go my own way, not caring about current trends which has been the case since I started Hasse Fröberg Musical Companion. Since day one our work has been consistent and now, even if it's on a rather small scale people are starting to realize what kind of music we play and what we're about. This is of course a result of our latest album "HFMC" and the European tour we did.
"HFMC" was released in March and was followed by magic reviews and opinions from our fans old and new, that was far more positive than we could ever have imagined. The gigs we've done on the album has established the band at another level. Our playing is way better than before and more stable. I mean even on an "off night" we're still good. Those things have reflected on the audience as you have REALLY surprized us with your praising of our performances. This means when I'm making a summary of 2015, I'm a very happy lad.

So far 2016 looks pretty good with some cool gigs confirmed, one of them being our first show in Estonia at Rock club Tapper in Tallinn on the 19th of February. (Here's the ticket link: http://www.piletilevi.ee/). I promise you we'll bring you details on our upcoming shows soon so stay tuned. (Official website: http://hfmcband.com/home). Lately I've been writing new music. So far I have 5 songs and approximately 30 minutes of material that we'll start working on in January. When writing the lyrics, I wish I could write love songs "again". However that's not the case. That seems to be impossible, probably because of the state the world is in at the moment. I can inform you I'm trying my best to avoid to write "Fallen Empire" all over again but I'm not sure I'm successful? I've also met Ola once to listen to his new ideas and he showed me some interresting stuff indeed. In other words, I can't wait to get this thing going.

This year I've been able to do a "two bands on one bus" tour again, which I've done a couple of times by now and I can honestly say it was a blast to tour with Enchant. We hit it off immediately from day one in a sunny Berlin and it only got better. If you ask me I'd say the balance between work and partying was on a professional level throughout the tour. If you would have asked Kjellvete that same question I bet his aswer would be something like: "This was like spending two weeks with AA".

Guess there's not much left to do but to wish you a Happy New Year. A fantastic 2016 to you all!

もし同じ質問をKjellvete(訳註:Kjell Haraldssonの事でしょう)にしたら、きっと「まるでAA(訳註alchoholics anonymous アルコホーリクス・アノニマスの略)と2週間過ごしたみたいだったよ」なんて答えるかもね。

Not just another night

Category : Hasse's Blog

I try my best to make every night special. Since HFMC don't have a budget I can brag about, we very much have to rely on ourselves, the interaction between the audience and that the chemistry we have in the band comes across nicely (I'm taking for granted we play and sing the right notes...with feeling of course). To me playing live is the total opposite to recording because you can add the visual aspect, and that is something I've been taking seriously since I started to play. On stage I don't think, I just do and that feels natural for me. In fact it's been like that for me since forever and our gig at Sweden Prog Fest was no exception from the rule. And you know what! This time my guitar worked throughout the whole set and that of course makes the task a whole lot easier.

Bryggarsalen is a cozy venue almost in the middle of Stockholm. I've played there a lot by now and I can say the audience is truly passionate about music and has big and listening ears as well. Therefore it's very rewarding when you get that loud response, not to talk about all the love we felt last friday. Fantastic...THANKS A LOT! The truth is lots of cool things happened on the day of our performance. Barracuda Triangle, in other words 3 of my friends from TFK, namely Tomas Bodin, Jonas Reingold and Felix Lehrmann showed up at the venue while we were up on stage, straight from Miami that is. They landed at Arlanda just in time to see our last 45 minutes! Afterwards it was great to hang with the guys. By now it feels like we're all one big family. For me the highlight of the evening was when Kjell finally got the chance to meet his favourite artist since he was 4 years old - the Hammond guru/Lady extraordinaire Merit Hemmingson. For a while the room became electric and it was wonderful to see Kjell become a "little kid again". He still knew how to behave though and I could really sense that Merit enjoyed his company (like all women do...like we all do actually).

If you forget I had an amp from hell, all was good actually and that goes for the saturday as well. Time for some thank you's. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for a job very well done: Mats Jonason, Håkan Granat, Jim Nurminen, Ulf Bejerstrand, all the bands and last but not least the real hero of the weekend, Josefine Faber who worked like a maniac 24/7 for two days to make this happen.
I borrowed the photos from Lennart and Agneta Wizén (I hope that's okay?) who sat just in front of the stage. Over and out. //Hasse

Pray for Paris

Category : Hasse's Blog
I'm sorry to say but I don't know a word of French. However I'm putting up this review of our gig in Paris about a month ago and frankly I don't care if it says we suck. I'm doing it to tell people to continue to support culture, it's more important than ever. Continue to go to concerts, enjoy art, theatre or whatever you fancy. Amuse yourself, enlighten yourself - support culture!

I've played in Paris over 10 times and it's always special to comeback to this mythical city and the latest time with HFMC was no exception from the rule. Now I just hope it will stay this way. The fact is I was in USA during 9/11 with TFK. We woke up in a hotelroom in Pittsburgh to the dreadful news and the whole situation was totally surreal. If I'm correct we played at a club on Manhattan less than a week before the attack. We cancelled the show in Detroit later that evening but carried on with the tour playing in Cincinatti on the night of the 12th September and then carried on with the rest of the gigs. We live in dark times indeed but I'm not giving up, it's business as usual. Now on friday the 20th of November we're playing on Sweden Prog Fest at Bryggarsalen in Stockholm and you're all mighty welcome! Here's where you can find tickets: http://www.tickster.com/sv/events/search?q=sweden+prog

Sometime soon we'll announce some new HFMC shows we have booked for 2016 so stay tuned. Before I forget, good luck to my bandmates in TFK Tomas, Jonas and Felix who are going to play at Cruize to the Edge and all the rest on the boat, collegues and friends and of course to Roine who's still out with Steve Hackett. To the rest of you...hope to see you on friday. HFMC will start to play at 9 o clock pm.

TFKで一緒のTomas、JonasとFelixはCruise To The Edgeにいるんだ。

The show must go on

I found this stunning reivew of the HFMC/Enchant gig at Robin2 in Bilston the other day and it did bring back some memories. The funny thing is that I honestly didn't expect much of that night. The classic "post Calais-Dover syndrome" hit me about 1 hour preshow after the dinner. To make a long story short, an incident, actually not a pleasant one happened at the customs in Calais. I can't tell you anything about it because of integrity reasons. This resulted in us all losing even more sleep since we missed the ferry we were supposed to take in the first place. Strangely enough it didn't affect the London show but one hour before we hit the stage at Robin2 I felt dead.

Sometimes it doesn't take much. This time I just needed to take a look at the guys in the band to get the confidence and the power back. I mean what can possibly go wrong when you're playing with these guys? As soon as we played the first chord I understood this will be a good night. To start with Robin2 is a great venue in all aspects, even if it wasn't as crowded as you had hoped for (hmmm...guess "Terrible Ted" alias Ted Leonard got the numbers a little wrong). Anyway, it was one of those nights when the vibe was right and we managed to keep the energy level spot on throughout all the different dynamics in the songs. Well I told you I was tired didn't I? Still, after maybe the first 15 minutes I entered "a kind of zone" that you sometimes do while playing. This night I felt like a weird mix of David Lee Roth and Jon Anderson (that's a good one, isn't it?) and was able to cope with just about anything. It was like my voice and fingers were running their own business and it's a great feeling when that happens. For crying out loud! Even the bartender was dancing that night while we were playing and that is something I have NEVER seen before!

In case you missed it, Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion are playing at Sweden Prog Fest at Bryggarsalen in Stockholm this year again. We're playing on friday the 20th of November at 9 o clock pm. Here's where you can find tickets: http://www.tickster.com/sv/events/search?q=sweden+prog
